School Superzone Newsletter March 2024

Hello King's Oak Parents and Carers!

We are excited to tell you about what’s been happening in our RBK School Superzone since our last update in September. If this is the first time you’re hearing about the Superzone - it’s a specially funded scheme aimed at creating a healthier environment for children and families at King's Oak. For more info see this earlier newsletter.

You said…

A big thank you to everyone who took part in our Superzone Survey back in June. The survey highlighted a number of priorities which we are trying to achieve:

  • Increased access to fruit and vegetables   🍎

  • After school physical activity classes / programmes 🤾🏼‍♂️

  • Walking, biking or scooting to school programmes 🚶🏽‍♀️

  • Healthy food options at local shops  🏫

We did!

  • 6 local restaurants have signed up to the Healthy Catering Commitment (HCC) which helps caterers and food businesses make simple, healthy improvements to their food

  • All eligible local retailers are now compliant with the High Fat Sugar Salt foods (HFSS) legislation restricting the promotion of HFSS in these restaurants

  • Residents enjoyed a local bat walk around Kingston Road recreation ground on the 20th September

  • Volunteers helped build 12 raised beds at the Milaap Centre, creating a unique food growing space for pupils of King's Oak

  • Food Growing Ambassadors from each year group have been selected to decorate raised beds and maintain King's Oak’s very own vegetable patch!

  • Food Growing workshops have now started to be delivered by AuLaw Farm.

  • BriteBox have started their very own cooking classes

  • A number of families took up the offer to receive bikes from Full Cycle in Kingston.

What’s to come?

  • Learn how to scoot safely with free Scootability sessions from Team Rubicon in June!

  • Learn to ride safely - more bikeability sessions to be offered free at your school this spring/summer terms!

  • More BriteBox too! Year 4 are still enjoying the foodie fun and Year 5 will get the opportunity in the Summer Term.

But that’s not all!

There are a bunch of other activities going on in your local area this term:

  • The local School Health team is offering a free 8-week online programme called “HENRY”  which helps the whole family to make positive changes for a healthier family lifestyle.

  • Get active as a family with free 30-minute fitness sessions every Saturday 9:30am at Fairfield Recreation Ground KT1 2UR, hosted by Our Parks. All abilities welcome.

  • The TEN Project offers free game-based tennis sessions for children aged 4-10. No matter your skill level, come down with the whole family and join the fun.

  • There is a lot of support also on Better Health: Healthier families, an invaluable NHS resource that helps your family make healthier choices and stay active.

Remember, you can also explore Connected Kingston - your go-to resource for discovering local activities and groups. It’s a great way to try something new and meet new people! We’ve put together a collection of local opportunities, including some free and low-cost options that can support children and young people to have fun and stay active.

Keep an eye out for future updates in upcoming newsletters!

Attendance Matters!

The first week back after half-term is always a challenge for attendance but I am pleased that although no class managed to acheive our 97% target, our overall attendance has improved from the week before half-term.

Our top three performing classes this week are:

1st - REB - 95.3%

2nd - 2AC - 95.2%

3rd - 4SR - 93.6%
