Year 5

The Earth, Moon and Sun
This week in Year 5, we’ve been learning about the relative sizes of the Earth, Moon, and Sun—and it’s been eye-opening! We explored the huge differences between them by looking at their diameters and thinking about the ratios that compare their sizes. For example, did you know the Sun is over 100 times wider than the Earth, and the Earth is about four times bigger than the Moon? To really bring these mind-blowing facts to life, we took our learning outside. Using metre sticks and lots of chalk, we drew out the diameters of the Earth, Moon, and Sun to scale on the playground. The Earth was a good size to manage, the Moon was much smaller, but when it came to the Sun, we were amazed—it stretched across a huge part of the space! Seeing it drawn out helped us truly understand just how massive the Sun is compared to the Earth and Moon. It was a fun and memorable way to learn science!
