Year 5

Over the moon for science

This week, Year 5 recapped the fascinating phases of the Moon in a fun and memorable way—by recreating them using biscuits! Pupils learnt how the Moon changes shape throughout the month, from new moon to full moon and back again, carefully scraping away biscuit “moon surfaces” to show each phase. This hands-on activity helped everyone understand why the Moon appears differently from Earth and how these changes follow a clear cycle. There was lots of discussion, teamwork and excitement as the biscuits slowly transformed into waxing and waning moons. Of course, the best part came at the end, when the evidence was enthusiastically eaten! We are hopeful that the learning will last much longer than the biscuits did, and that Year 5 will now be able to spot and name the Moon’s phases whenever they look up at the night sky.
