Year 5

Binary Code

This week, Year 5 have been exploring binary code in computing, linking their learning to our class text about Curiosity, the Mars Rover. Pupils discovered how binary is a language computers use to communicate, made up of just two digits: 0 and 1. We focused on 8-bit binary and learned key vocabulary such as bit, byte and value. Through practical activities, the children saw how combining eight bits allows computers to represent up to 255 different numbers, which is essential for storing and sending information. They made thoughtful connections between binary code and how rovers like Curiosity receive instructions and send data back to Earth across millions of miles. The class showed great curiosity and enthusiasm, developing both their computing knowledge and their understanding of how technology supports space exploration.
