Year 5

Coiling with clay
This week, Year 5 have been busy becoming Ancient Egyptian artists and designers by creating their own canopic jars in art. First, the children designed their jars carefully, thinking about traditional Egyptian shapes, patterns and symbols. They then used clay and the coiling technique to build and recreate the shape of their designs, developing their sculpting skills and learning how to join clay securely. Once the main structures were complete, the children added detailed hieroglyphs and decorative features using scratching techniques and raised relief methods to give their jars an authentic Ancient Egyptian appearance. Everyone showed great creativity, patience and resilience while working with the clay; it has been wonderful to see each unique design come to life. Next week, the children are looking forward to painting their canopic jars to add colour and complete their impressive final pieces.
