Nursery

From Beanstalks to Blackberries

This week in Nursery, we have been reading the traditional story Jack and the Beanstalk. The children enjoyed listening to the story and joining in with repeated phrases. We explored the characters, talked about what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story, and discussed how the beanstalk grew from a tiny bean. The children also took part in activities linked to the story, helping to develop their language, imagination and understanding of the world.

As part of our learning about growing, we explored the compost heap. We discussed what compost is, what materials can be added to it, and how food scraps and garden waste break down over time to create nutrient-rich compost that helps plants grow. The children were curious about the composting process and enjoyed talking about how we can help care for our environment by recycling natural materials.

During our outdoor learning, the children discovered blackberries growing in the nursery playground. Together, we carefully picked the ripe blackberries, washed them thoroughly, and had the opportunity to taste them. We talked about where blackberries grow, how they change as they ripen, and the importance of washing fruit before eating it. The children enjoyed exploring the different tastes, textures and colours while developing an appreciation for nature and healthy eating.
