Reception

The Colour Monster
This week in Reception, we have been exploring our emotions through the wonderful story The Colour Monster. The children have really enjoyed getting to know the Colour Monster and thinking about how different emotions can make us feel.
We have been talking about five key emotions: happy, sad, fear, calm and anger. Through stories, discussions, role play and classroom activities, the children have been encouraged to recognise these feelings in themselves and others.
We have talked about what might make us feel happy, such as playing with friends, spending time with people we love or achieving something we are proud of. We have also explored times when we might feel sad and discussed how it is okay to feel this way and how talking to someone can help.
Fear and anger have also been important parts of our conversations. The children have shared different things that can make them feel worried or frightened, and we have discussed ways we can help ourselves when these feelings become big. We have been learning that taking deep breaths, finding a quiet space and talking to a trusted adult can help us to feel calmer.
The children have particularly enjoyed talking about calm and what helps them to feel peaceful and relaxed. We have been building our emotional vocabulary and encouraging the children to use words to explain how they are feeling.
Why not ask your child at home which colour they would choose for their feelings today?
Have a lovely weekend,
