Year 2
Bridging through 10
This week in Year 2, we have been focusing on adding and subtracting two-digit numbers and bridging through ten.
As we moved from addition to subtraction, we spent some extra time practising and consolidating our understanding of these concepts to help everyone feel more confident.
Addition: Bridging Through Ten
We learnt how to partition the second number to make ten first. For example, in 8 + 6, we partition 6 into 2 and 4. We add 2 to 8 to make 10, then add the remaining 4 to find the total of 14.
Subtraction: Bridging Through Ten
For subtraction, we used a similar strategy. For example, in 15 − 6, we partition 6 into 5 and 1. We subtract 5 from 15 to reach 10, then subtract the remaining 1 to find the answer of 9.
To support our learning, we used ten frames, part-part-whole models and number lines to help us visualise the numbers and work out our answers.
Maths: Next week, we will compare the different strategies we have learnt to solve addition and subtraction calculations. We will discuss which methods work best and choose the most efficient strategy for each calculation.
English: In English, we will be preparing for our final piece of writing based on our story Poles Apart. We will use what we have learnt to help us plan, organise and develop our ideas in preparation for our final writing.
Well done, Year 2, for your hard work and perseverance this week!
