Year 5

Black History Month

This October, during Black History Month, we've been learning about the lives of people of African descent in Tudor times, a period of history where people from Africa were living and working in England. We've discovered fascinating individuals like John Blanke, a trumpeter who played for King Henry VIII and whose image can be seen on historical documents. We've also learned about Jacques Francis, a diver who worked for Queen Elizabeth I, and Mary Fillis, a servant who became a respected dressmaker in London, showing that people of African descent have been an important part of British history for centuries.
