Year 5

Gunpowder, treason and plot

We have been learning all about Guy Fawkes and the famous Gunpowder Plot of 1605! We discovered how a group of men, including Guy Fawkes, planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament to protest against King James I and his harsh treatment of Catholics. Guy Fawkes was caught before the plan could succeed, and his capture is the reason we celebrate Bonfire Night every year on the 5th of November, with fireworks and bonfires to remember that the King survived. We also linked this learning to our earlier work on the Tudors, when we found out that Catholics were often persecuted during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. This helped us understand why some people at the time felt angry and desperate for change. Learning about the Gunpowder Plot has really helped us see how events from the Tudor and Stuart periods are connected in British history!
