Year 5

Properties of materials
This week in Year 5 science, we have been investigating the properties of materials, with a special focus on soluble and insoluble substances. We began by discussing what happens when different materials are mixed with water and then planned a fair test to find out which substances dissolve. Working scientifically, we made predictions and carefully considered how to keep our experiment fair. We tested pasta, sugar, coffee, cocoa powder, salt and sand, adding each material to the same amount of water and observing what happened. We recorded our results in a clear table, noting whether each substance dissolved or remained visible. The children were excited to discover that some materials, such as sugar and salt, are soluble, while others, such as sand and pasta, are insoluble. We also discussed how careful observations and accurate recording help scientists draw reliable conclusions. It was fantastic to see everyone working together, asking questions and developing their scientific enquiry skills!
