Year 4

Curious Creatures: Minibeasts, Diagrams and Discovery

This week in science, the children have been learning about minibeasts and how scientists classify living things. They worked really thoughtfully to create their own diagrams, deciding how to group different minibeasts into categories of their choice.

Rather than being given the categories, the children were encouraged to think scientifically by asking questions such as: Do they fly? Do they have legs? Are they nocturnal? This helped them develop their reasoning skills and explain why certain minibeasts belonged together. It was fantastic to see the range of ideas and the confidence the children showed when justifying their choices.

Next week, we will be taking our learning outside with some fieldwork research. The children will explore our local habitat and go wildlife hunting (gently and carefully!) to observe what living things we can find. They will practise observing, recording, and thinking like real scientists while learning more about the surrounding environment.
