Year 5

Will it dissolve or not?

This week in Year 5, we have been learning the difference between dissolving and melting. We learnt a solid material dissolves when the solid disappears into the liquid, and becomes a solution. However, when a solid melts it requires heat to turn into a liquid.

We explored a range of solid materials such as sand, cocoa, pasta, rice, sugar, salt and ground coffee and made predictions, observed and recorded our findings whilst exploring its solubility. We made sure we carried out a fair test by using only a teaspoon of each material and 50ml of water.  By the end of the experiment we identified the materials that were soluble (it dissolves in water) and insoluble (it does not dissolve).
