Year 6

English and topic

This week in English, we have edited, improved and published our final postcards from the perspective of Olive writing home to her mum. We have considered the effect on the reader and carefully selected phrases and vocabulary to make the reader feel slightly guilty for sending their child away to be evacuated.

In topic, we have learnt all about bomb shelters and have explored the positives and negatives of Anderson shelters, Morrison shelters and communal air raid shelters such as underground stations. We have identified common features and have thought about the suitability of each. In pairs, we examined a range of sources - questioning their reliability and accuracy. From this, we applied our learning habit of empathy to suggest how children would have felt at the time (particularly in the early stages of the war).
